The 1,060 square metre (11,410 square foot) spa and health club occupies two levels of the five-star hotel and provides hotel guests, day visitors and members with a state-of-the-art health club, 15 metre indoor salt water pool and a zero edge Jacuzzi with floor to ceiling fold back windows revealing expansive views of Melbourne’s skyline.
Opened in 2005 with a Feng Shui blessing ceremony, the Chuan Spa experience is founded on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Now well established as one of the city’s most renowned spa destinations, in 2009 Chuan was named the Top Hotel Spa in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific in the ‘Travel + Leisure USA’s 2009 World’s Best Awards readers survey’.
In Chinese, Chuan means flowing water. Considered to be the source of life, water represents the re-birth and re-balancing of mind, body and soul in Chinese culture. Designed by Melbourne-based firm, Bate & Webb, the inspiration for Chuan Spa evolved from the idea of a Chinese garden where men and women retreat from their everyday world to a place of tranquillity and calm. With silk fabric wall panels embroidered with floral motifs, bamboo floor finishes and a warm, natural colour palette, the emphasis is on an uncluttered atmosphere with soft, indirect light and an ambiance of calm. The pebbles, brass water feature, curved hallways and timber panels capture the elements of a natural landscape in accordance with the guidelines of Melbourne Feng Shui Master, Jodi Brunner.
Created to provide treatments and facilities to restore balance and energy while promoting well being, relaxation and fitness, the spa offers a range of spa treatments and services that are based on TCM in a modern contemporary setting that is always calming and peaceful. Offering more than 40 specialty spa treatments the Chuan Spa combines the finest traditions of the east and west.
The Chuan Spa uses a private label range consisting of 14 signature products, which are made exclusively in Australia for the Spa. The range was created in consultation with a Chinese health care expert with qualifications in Chinese Medicine, Naturopathy and traditional Chinese massage therapies, and draws on the time honoured practices of TCM and the powers of the five key elements – wood, earth, metal, water and fire. The range is available for retail at the Spa along with Thalgo – the European made, marine-based treatment range also used in Chuan Spa treatments. In April, 2010 a third luxurious skin care and beauty range, Phyt’s Laboratories, was introduced to Chuan Spa. Phyt’s entire range of products for professional treatments and for personal use is 100% natural and 100% organic, meaning there are absolutely no colouring agents, no preservatives and no synthetic ingredients. Rather, a complex combination of plants, flowers, leaves, bark, oils, vitamins and trace minerals help 'turn the lights on' in the active layers of skin resulting in a healthy, smooth and glowing complexion.
The eight treatment rooms, four of which are designed for couples or as private relaxation lounges, provide a location where couples and friends can share a spa experience together. Separate men’s and women’s wet areas mean that before or after a treatment, the aroma infused steam rooms, saunas, therapeutic snail showers, pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor deck provide a place for respite where the body and mind can be restored.
The fitness centre within the Chuan Spa offers twenty-four pieces of fitness equipment including the latest technology in both cardio and resistance machines. Guests can enjoy a comprehensive full body work out in the cardio theatre, with eight large-screen televisions and a wide selection of media for their entertainment. The fitness floor located on level 10 also offers classes in yoga, pilates and tai chi.
